This painting depicts the Iron Mask Mine, located on Battle Mountain in Colorado. Thousands of miners and prospectors who flocked to Colorado in the late 1800s created new settlements and mining towns. The first mines on Battle Mountain were silver mines discovered in 1879. Later, the Iron Mask Mine produced zinc on a larger scale than silver or gold, but closed in the mid-1980s.
