Overview
Indigenous peoples of North America regularly expressed gratitude and reverence for nature’s generosity. Depending on their environments, some tribes settled down and farmed in a fixed place, while others, like the Great Plains tribes, lived on the move as they followed buffalo herds.
Buffalo were instrumental to the people living on the Great Plains. They generously provided them with food, dwellings called tipis, warm fur to help survive cold weather, bones for making tools, and much more. To the Great Plains tribes, buffalo were a symbol of sacrifice. Giving to others without expecting anything in return like the buffalo did was considered
the most respected form of behavior.
