Overview
To the Indigenous peoples of North America, buffalo were like family. Buffalo provided food and tools, and their skins were sewn into homes and warm wool robes. In the late 1800s, the United States government intentionally sanctioned the decimation of buffalo herds for the construction of the Trans-continental railroad. The mass slaughter of buffalo and their replacement with domestic cattle had a detrimental effect on the ecological health of the region. T.D. Kelsey’s investment in the protection of endangered animals contributed to his decision to create this bronze sculpture of a buffalo.
