Richard Tallent painted landscapes across the Western United States. In 1887, he focused on capturing the landscape of New Mexico and the Pueblo people. The Puebloans, who lived in compact permanent settlements, began trading horses with the nomadic tribes of the Northern Plains after the Spanish introduced horses to the region in 1598. This trade network, facilitated by Plains raiders and traders, rapidly spread horses throughout the Southern Plains.
