Wendy Red Star enjoys exploring museum collections to bring forth histories to her own community, the Apsáalooke, and to a broader public. These works were inspired by her research into some hand-drawn catalog cards at the Denver Art Museum. She focused on old catalog cards related to the annual Crow Fair, a famous Indigenous peoples festival in Montana. At the Crow Fair, people in traditional clothing parade on horseback. Red Star photographed these parade participants, then removed their backgrounds and combined the images with the catalog cards. She often connects historical items with contemporary events to show the relevance of these items to today’s Indigenous peoples.
