The Navajo people have incorporated popular symbols of American culture, like the flag, in their works because they sold these American flag-themed works to tourists. The production of rugs with this motif began in the late 1800s and continues to this day. The Navajo altered the rectangular shape of the textile, changed the number of stars, or even substituted the stars with flowers or anchors to create entirely different motifs.
