The Arctic: Living with the Sea

Marine animals are very important to the people living in the Arctic. The longstanding culture of Arctic tribes who hunted sea animals from kayaks is characterized by harpoons and wrist guards used during the Punuk period(800–1400). The abstract designs carved on them symbolize various animals. By decorating these tools, Indigenous peoples in the Arctic honor the spirits of animals and wish for success in hun ting.
