The Southeast: Wearing the Sun’s Intense Colors

The so-called “five civilized tribes” (the Choctaw, Chickasaw, Seminole, Creek, and Cherokee), all of whom made contact with settlers early on, lived in what is now the warm and humid southeast region of the United States. The Seminole wore colorful traditional clothing with stripes in a variety of colors, including red and blue. The Cherokee and the Chitimacha create various types of baskets using the stem s of plants growing around them, such as bamboo.
