Overview
Within the communities of the Great Plains tribes, only those who are highly accomplished and respected are allowed to wear these headdresses. Apsáalooke women wear beautiful dresses adorned with the teeth of elk, a large member of the deer family. These dresses symbolize the wearer’s wealth and social standing. Upper garments worn by warriors, beaded dresses, and the Osage blankets with their ribbon decorations are reserved for ceremonial use. Moccasins covering the lower parts of legs are worn by women. The unique and beautiful designs and colors of moccasins indicate the tribe to which the wearer belongs.
