The Northeast: Enveloped by Forests, Lakes and Rivers

The northeast region is renowned for the Ho-Chunk people’s skirts marked by symmetrical red and green ribbons. This symmetry is an abstracted design based on flowers. These skirts are worn by women when dancing at special events. Moccasins made by the Mohawk have soft soles and are designed to be thick for thermal purposes, unlike those of the Great Plains tribes with their hard soles. Baskets made of porcupine quills and beaded ornaments are popular among tourists as special souvenirs, helping keep communities alive.
