Overview
This painting by the Hopi artist Dan Namingha depicts a house of the Hopi tribe in Hano in what is now Arizona in the United State. Houses like this are also called “adobe,” which is a Spanish word for “mudbrick.” Because adobe bricks are made by mixing dirt rich in clay, sand, and silt with water and straw, houses constructed with them can remain strong and last well over 1000 years in the dry environment of the American Southwest. This home belonged to the artist’s great-grandmother and renowned potter, Nampeyo, and has remained in the family ever since.
