John Wallace and his son, Fred, carved this post, which was used as a support structure for clan houses. They created this as a part of live demonstrations held at an exhibition of Indigenous arts of North American at the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition in San Francisco, California. John Wallace was a renowned Haida carver and artist known for his exceptional skill in traditional Haida woodcarving, and learned the art of carving from his father. He became known for his intricate and finely detailed works, which often depicted traditional Haida stories, legends, and symbols. Throughout his life, Wallace played a significant role in revitalizing Haida artistic traditions by passing on his knowledge and skills to younger generations, ensuring that the art of Haida carving would continue to thrive.
