The Chitimacha have lived in the Mississippi River Delta region of present-day Louisiana in the Northeastern United States. Chitimacha weavers create their baskets using dyed and undyed river cane, which is split and plaited into elaborate geometric and natural designs. These baskets were made in the 1930s to continue the legacy of traditional craftsmanship within their tribal community. The Chitimacha’s basketry is a way of restoring their traditional culture and commemorating their cultural knowledge.
