Overview
The Cherokee have a long tradition of making river cane baskets. These durable baskets were originally used to store food. Each step in their creation is done by hand: harvesting the river cane, cutting it into strips, scraping them thin, and dyeing them with natural dyes made from local plants. River cane was once abundant in the Southeastern United States where the Cherokee live in, but expanding towns and cities have encroached on its natural habitat, making it increasingly difficult to find.
