Cheyenne women wear ‘high-top’ moccasins. These moccasins have been worn since the late 1800s and are still popular with some Cheyenne women today. The design that covers the lower leg was originally derived from the moccasins worn by the Dog Soldiers, a class of warriors who played a strategically significant role in Cheyenne warfare. Eventually, they came to be worn by Cheyenne women.
