Blankets used by the Osage were made of wool and silk obtained through trade with the French. These blankets have a decoration called “ribbon work,” which began in the 1600s. Colored ribbons are sewn onto wool blankets. The red used in these blankets was considered the color of life and was often used in the clothing of women, who were revered as life-givers. These blankets are worn or carried during dances and ceremonial occasions, or often given as gifts at these events. Osage blankets became famous for their beauty and are still being produced today.
