Overview
This katsina is called “Ha-ha-i Wuthi,” meaning a woman who pours out her many blessings and the water of life on humanity. She nourishes all beings, including plants, animals, humans, and even the rocks of the earth. For the Hopi, who lived in an arid environment, water was extremely important, and thus they regarded Ha-ha-i Wuthi as the spiritual mother of the katsinam. Hopi artists used the roots of cottonwood trees which grow along streams or near water to carve this water-associated figure.
