Overview
This katsina represents the Koshare clown, considered a sacred being by the Hopi. His body is covered in alternating white and black stripes, and corn husks extend from the horns on his head. During various ceremonies and community gatherings the Koshare often acts as a trickster, but he usually performs a variety of roles. The Koshare is associated with fertility, the sun, rain, and the corn harvest cycle. Carvings like this are also used to teach young people about the natural and spiritual worlds.
