Traveling across the United States over the course of thirty years and produced more than 40,000 photos. His works are clearly valuable for recording the Indigenous lives and cultures. However, They are also criticized for not showing the Indigenous people of the time as they really were. None who were influenced by settlers can be found among his photographs. Instead, the images feature clothing, houses, appearances, and landscapes that fit the settlers’ stereotypes of Indigenous peoples.
