This painting depicts a ritual performed by the Apache. The dancers are shown wearing crown-like masks. These special masks and garments symbolize the Mountain Spirits. The dancers hold wands resembling swords in both hands. This ritual is performed to protect the community from disease and enemies and is still practiced today.
