Overview
By the mid 19th century, Navajo weavings were the most valuable intertribal trade item across North America. This serape would be worn horizontally across the body or over the shoulder. The wool was dyed with indigo and the vibrant red dye brought to the Indigenous communities of the Southwest by settlers. The Navajo weavers who have created such blankets are mostly women, and the practice continues to this day.
